What is in the space between particles?

Renè Descartes used to say that space is never empty, just devoid of what we’re looking for. He said this to illustrate the idea that there is a fundamental particle of space that makes things three-dimensional. He’s right, in a way. The space in between particles exists, so it’s “space”, though it doesn’t contain anything. It’s just black abyss.
